Outland Denim

Outland Denim

Ethics, aesthetics and social redemption.

Let's move to Australia, in 2011. It's here that James Bartle launched Outland Denim , a project born from a strong ethical motivation: to offer a concrete alternative to young women survivors of human trafficking. After attending an event exposing this very phenomenon, James realized he wanted to do something tangible. So he found himself in a small café in Cambodia, with a few yards of denim, a pair of scissors, and some patterns. It was the beginning of an adventure that would change the way we understand fashion.

From the beginning, Outland Denim decided to buck the traditional industry, one of the most polluting and exploitative in the world. The brand has focused entirely on clean, fair, and transparent production, becoming the first Australian brand and the second in the world in the denim sector to achieve B Corporation™ certification. This important recognition attests to high standards in social, environmental, and governance matters.

The true heart of Outland is the women who make each piece: artisans trained through a support model that guarantees safe working conditions, decent wages, training, and professional growth. The result? Beautiful, high-quality jeans, but above all, full of meaning.

Sustainability is present in every detail of the production process. The denim used is GOTS certified and sourced from Turkey, thanks to a long-standing partnership with supplier Bossa. The washing phase—notoriously among the most polluting in the production cycle—is managed in the brand's in-house Wash House , which uses Jeanologia technology to reduce water and energy consumption. All within a 100% ethical and traceable supply chain .

Transparency is key. Outland only works with suppliers who meet high social and environmental standards, as established by its Code of Conduct , inspired by the ETI Base Code and the four fundamental principles of the International Labour Organization . Freedom of association, the fight against forced labor, the abolition of child labor, and equal treatment are non-negotiable.

Each year, the brand publishes its Impact Report , which details its achievements and future goals. It also releases a voluntary statement against modern slavery , in line with the Australian Modern Slavery Act of 2018, and is an active participant in the UN Global Compact , committing to continuous improvement through responsible purchasing policies .

Outland Denim isn't just fashion. It's a business model that demonstrates how business can be done differently, putting people and the planet at the center . It's a movement that speaks of redemption, dignity, and positive change.

Wearing Outland means choosing a conscious style , which does not sacrifice ethics and sustainability for beauty – indeed, it integrates them perfectly.
